Incise is a striking, hand-crafted print, drawn from the layered dialogue between traditional technique and contemporary reinterpretation. It began life as a drypoint etching made in early 2020—just before the stillness of the pandemic settled across Australia. Years later, in 2024, the artist returned to this image with fresh eyes and a digital hand, capturing it with an iPhone and layering it anew with line work that both echoes and challenges the original form.

At its core, the piece is an imaginative meditation on a tree—not as it is, but as it feels. Curving lines swell and coil, evoking the wind moving through foliage, the tree’s quiet conversation with its environment. Amid the lyrical motion, a central point of stillness emerges: the suggestion of an eye. It watches—not threatening, but observant—anchoring the composition in a gaze that connects viewer, nature, and imagination.

Within the organic contours lie familiar motifs—a sturdy trunk, web-like threads, and seemingly aimless doodles that tug at memory and dream. The visual layering creates a surface that’s both tactile and psychological, a landscape of mind as much as matter.

Positioned between abstraction and surreal reverie, Incise speaks to the act of looking—closely, curiously, and through time. It is printed in a strictly limited edition of thirty, each copy signed and numbered by the artist. Using archival pigment inks on beautiful cotton rag paper, the work is produced in the artist’s studio, honouring the centuries-old tradition of intimate, hand-finished printmaking.
