Drypoint Etching – The Thinker (Expecting)
This drypoint print contemplates thought not as abstraction, but as lived, embodied experience. At its heart is the quiet presence of a pregnant woman—her form echoing Rodin’s iconic Thinker, yet reimagined through the lens of creation and renewal. In place of the solitary philosopher, we find a figure poised at the threshold of life’s most elemental transformation.
Here, the intellectual is grounded in the physical, and the idea of thinking is expanded to encompass the profound, everyday labour of being human. Birth is not merely a metaphor—it is the counterweight to isolation, anchoring thought in the cyclical truths of flesh, time, and continuity. Subtle cultural symbols are woven into the composition, hinting at broader mythologies of creation and endurance.
The image is pressed into a fine sheet of Somerset paper—renowned among printmakers for its superb texture and durability. The printed area follows A4 dimensions, resting within a generous page of approximately 28 x 37 cm, allowing for elegant framing or float mounting.
A contemplative piece, at once intimate and universal.
