A vintage screen print from the 1970s, this piece captures a quiet, introspective moment: a young woman seated on a commuter train, lost in thought as she waits patiently for her stop. It harks back to a time when the outer suburbs were still being stitched into the fabric of the city, and steam locomotives, though fading, still pulled carriages through the sprawl of expanding suburbia.
The composition is suffused with rich, assertive colours—suggestive of serenity, yet tinged with the visual energy of the era. While not fully psychedelic, the palette leans gently in that direction, evoking a mood that’s both meditative and vivid. Notably, the edges of the image break away from the traditional rectangle, with cut-out forms that resist conventional framing and add to its singular presence.
Each print is one of a kind, and only a small number have survived from the original 1970s series. Most remain in good to excellent condition within the printed area, though some show subtle signs of age along the paper’s edge. They were printed on Burnie cartridge—a sturdy, high-quality drawing paper made in Tasmania during that time.
